Downshire Guiding Star Parade - 10/09/10

I can hardly believe this parade has come round again so quickly. It has always been seen as the end of the Marching season.

Huge crowds lined the route of the town from early on, supporters travel from far and wide to attend. For years it has been big in many ways. Big bands, big crowds with a big image which is a great end to the season. It rained at times which failed to dampen spirits as the night went on. From early on the bands were on the move.

The parade goes down both sides of the main street with huge crowds around the cut or tunnel where bands always try to impress. The noise level is huge all night and at times the crowds are to close to bands. Pride of the Hill Rathfriland big tonight as were the Kilcluney Volunteers. I keep saying it, if you cant perform at this parade then you cant do it anywhere. Its just one of the nights where it all becomes worthwhile after a long season. 82 bands on show tonight which is a brilliant turnout for the hosts. All bands and bandsmen/women once again helped to make the parade one of the best this year.

Below is a selection of photographs of the band in action.

Today we were awarded:
2nd Colour Party
1st Marching and discipline
2nd Blood and Thunder style and appearance
1st Blood and Thunder Bass drum
2nd Blood and Thunder Drump corp
1st Blood and Thunder
2nd Overall

Our own band paraded with 9 of a colour party, 1 drum major, 17 drummers, 4 bass drummers, 4 cymbal players, 29 flautists and marshalls. A big turnout for us. The bass drummers were on fire with a good tempo all night. The side drums were the best i have heard them for a long time with the fluters on the money. Anyway, no more trumpet blowing, we enjoyed the whole night and the whole season so far. Tonight we were awarded the top prizes, 5 years out of 6 we have won it. A record our band is very proud of, next year we will try to do it all again, only that bit better.

Well done Downshire Guiding Star.
